To transfer a .com, .org or .net domain name away from Engine Room Technology, follow these steps.

Make preparations

  1. Visit https://clients.engineroomtechnology.com and log in to your account.
  2. Unlock the domain name - see this article How to change registrar lock
  3. Obtain an authorisation code (also known as an auth code EPP code or transfer key) - see this article How to obtain an EPP code
  4. Verify the administrator's contact information for the domain is correct and that you can receive email on this address in order to approve the transfer. See this article on domain name contact details.
You will be sent emails requiring you to confirm approval of the transfer during the transfer process, so it is essential that you can receive emails on this account.

Start the transfer process

  1. Give the authorisation code to your transfer contact, e.g. your new provider or the person or company to whom you wish to transfer the domain.
  2. This contact should then start a transfer request at whichever registrar (i.e. domain registration company) they use.
  3. Watch out for emails requesting your approval of the transfer, follow the instructions in such emails, and where required, enter the authorisation code.
Important: Take care to only respond to approval requests from the specific company that you know your contact is using for the transfer. If unsure, check with your contact before accepting.
  4. Once approval is granted it can take approximately 7 days to complete, but this does vary.

Important notes

  • Please note that certain domains cannot be transferred within 60 days of registration or previous transfer, unless this restriction is waived by the losing registrar.
  • This process is permanent - only share the authorisation code with trusted contacts.
  • Once the process is initiated, any requests for help should be directed to the gaining registrar or contact.
